Smart home energy features have been easy to dismiss as a novelty — a graph in an app that nobody acts on. Two developments have converged to make them genuinely useful this winter.
The standard caught up
Matter version 1.3, finalised in 2024, extended device types for energy management, water leak sensors and improved robot vacuum mapping. Those additions are only now reaching shipping hardware in volume through the 2025 and 2026 product cycles.
A standardised energy device type means a smart plug, a heat pump and a solar inverter can report consumption in a common format any compliant hub understands — instead of each living in its own vendor app.
The prices caught up too
Dutch TTF futures, Europe’s main gas benchmark, have climbed roughly 120% since the start of 2026, reaching about €63.7/MWh in mid-August.
The winter outlook is worse. Forecasts are moving toward an average near €60/MWh for Q4 2026 and Q1 2027, from €45/MWh currently. Storage is depleted, and record temperatures are raising electricity demand while drought and heat curb hydro and nuclear output.
Gas and electricity bills could rise if wholesale prices stay elevated long enough to reach consumers.
Where monitoring actually changes behaviour
Whole-home visibility is interesting. Per-device visibility is actionable.
The devices that surprise people are consistently the same: immersion heaters and electric water heating, older fridges and freezers, tumble dryers, and anything with a heating element running on a timer nobody has revisited.
A standardised energy device type makes it practical to measure these individually rather than infer them from a whole-house figure.
What to check before buying
Which Matter version? A plug certified as a basic on/off device does not report energy the way one certified against the energy management device type does. Both carry the Matter logo.
Does the hub expose it? Platform support lags specification support consistently. The device may support a 1.3 feature your hub does not surface.
Does it work locally? Matter certification and local operation are separate claims. Energy history that lives only in a vendor cloud disappears when the vendor does.
Realistic expectations
Monitoring does not reduce consumption. It identifies where consumption is, and the reduction comes from what you do next — usually unglamorous things like changing a timer, replacing an old appliance, or lowering a water temperature.
In a normal year that saving is marginal. In a winter where wholesale gas has doubled, the same behavioural change is worth considerably more — which is the honest case for buying the hardware now rather than the feature list.
