Matter’s marketing has always led with interoperability — the promise that a device bought for one ecosystem works in another. The quieter additions of the last two specification cycles are arguably more useful day to day.
What version 1.3 actually added
Version 1.3 was finalised in 2024 and has been rolling through the 2025 and 2026 product cycles. It extended device types for:
- Energy management
- Water leak sensors
- Improved robot vacuum mapping
The delay between specification and shipping hardware is why 2026 feels like a step change even though the standards work happened earlier. Manufacturers design product cycles around specification releases, not the other way round.
Why energy management is the significant one
A standardised energy device type means a smart plug, a heat pump and a solar inverter can report consumption in a common format that any compliant hub understands.
Before this, energy monitoring lived in vendor apps. You could see what a specific brand’s devices consumed, in that brand’s app, with that brand’s history. Cross-referencing meant exporting spreadsheets or simply not bothering.
A common device type makes whole-home energy visibility a hub feature rather than a vendor feature. That is the difference between a curiosity and something you act on.
Water leak sensors are the highest-value cheap device
Leak sensors are inexpensive, and the loss they prevent is not. A failed washing machine hose or a slow leak under a sink produces damage measured in thousands.
Standardisation matters here specifically because leak sensors are the devices most likely to be bought one at a time, years apart, from whatever brand was available. A common device type means the sensor bought in 2027 works with the hub bought in 2025.
What else arrived in 2026
Beyond 1.3’s device types, the standard gained camera support, faster NFC-based setup, cross-ecosystem sharing through Joint Fabric, and tighter security requirements — the combination that moved Matter from a promising idea into infrastructure hundreds of manufacturers build against.
Owl Home’s wired smoke and CO alarm securing Matter 1.5 certification is the clearest signal of that maturity: safety hardware manufacturers are now accepting the standard’s security model.
Practical advice
Check the device type, not just the logo. A plug certified as a basic on/off device does not report energy the way one certified against the energy management device type does. Both say “Matter” on the box.
Start leak sensors before anything else. They are cheap, the standard now covers them properly, and the return is asymmetric.
Expect your hub to lag. Platform support trails specification support consistently. A device may support a 1.3 feature your hub does not yet expose.
The interoperability story got the attention. The device-type expansion is what makes a smart home do something other than switch lights on.
